Cross-curicular teaching at our school is still mostly a Utopia. Stijn Vertommen is an IT teacher at a Dutch secondary school. Together we have been discussing how to work together on integrating digital literacy in several subjects, not just Computer Science itself. In the ’20s our school is in transition from being a typically Dutch traditional school (closed classrooms, separate subjects, no BYOD yet, 2 or 3 computer classrooms and 2 computer libraries, and no IT-PAC yet).

In this project we have been discussing how to connect what we teach in Digital Literacy in English ages 16-18 and what is being taught now in Year 1 in a cross-curricular approach. As a result of the lessons in year 1, students ages 11-12 were able to operate Microsoft 365, which the older students couldn’t. Also.. more to come…
